Ronald Koeman comments on Southampton target Tonny Vilhena

Feyenoord

Feyenoord’s Tonny Vilhena has been linked with a transfer to Premier League high-fliers Southampton.

The 20-year-old midfielder played under Saints head coach Ronald Koeman at Feyenoord, and the coach has confirmed his interest in Vilhena to Voetbal International.

Although he has featured 22 times for De club aan de Maas this term, there have been indications that he is unhappy, and the Daily Mail claim that this unhappiness could see Koeman make a transfer move for his former favourite. Despite being young and fairly inexperienced, the Dutch Under-21 star has been targeted as a long-term midfield replacement for Morgan Schneiderlin, whilst Jack Cork has also been linked with a departure from St Mary’s Stadium this month - as per the VI report.

It comes as no surprise to see the Saints linked with a player who not only represents their transfer model, but is also a personal project to Koeman, and, whilst the links could have been just rumours, the 51-year-old has confirmed that he is interested in Vilhena, who is unhappy and wants to change clubs.

Quoted by VI, Koeman said in a press conference: "I'm very interested in him. Vilhena is unhappy with his current club and wants to play more. He wants to change club.

“I know him, believe in his qualities and he is still young.”

Referenced in the same report, Jack Cork’s likely departure to Swansea City is mentioned, and it seems that Vilhena will only be signed if someone is sold.

“If he goes we get another midfielder,” Koeman added. “If he does not leave, it remains silent on our side.”
