Wigan Athletic are in discussions with Liverpool over a loan deal for teenage sensation Sheyi Ojo, according to the Daily Mail.
Latics boss Malky Mackay watched the 17-year-old winger turn out for the Under-21s in Monday night’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at the Leigh Sports Village, and is now hoping to bring him to the DW Stadium for the remainder of the season.
Several other clubs are said to have expressed interest in a loan deal, with Liverpool feeling the youngster could benefit in the same vein as teammate Jordan Ibe, who enjoyed a successful stint at Derby County over the first half of the campaign.
U21 manager Michael Beadle told the Liverpool Echo this week: “You might be surprised, there’s a couple of clubs bigger than that interested in him.
“We’ve got to make sure it’s the right thing for Sheyi and if he goes out that he’s going to play and if he’s not going to play, he’s got to get access - like Conor Randall tonight who’s at Shrewsbury - to come back and play for us.
“We’ve got a very good player on our hands there, he’s not the only one, we’ve got four or five others that we’re very keen on as well. It’s all about the decisions we make now for him and with him to help him get to the next level. But I’m certainly glad he’s in my dressing room and nobody else’s.”
Signed from MK Dons in 2011, Ojo has already spent time in Brendan Rodgers’ first-team squad after stepping up to the U21s this season, making the bench for the recent Premier League games against Burnley and Leicester City.
Wigan sit 23rd in the Championship after 27 games and, after selling Shaun Maloney and Callum McManaman this week to the Chicago Fire and West Bromwich Albion, respectively, are desperate for some attacking reinforcements.
It remains to be seen whether the England Under-18 international is ready for a regular role in the second-tier but, regardless, he certainly looks on course to enjoying a bright future at Anfield in the coming seasons.
