Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy told talkSPORT yesterday on the Colin Murray show why he’s backing Chelsea to beat Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup final.
When pressed to give a prediction over the game, Murphy suggested that the beating Spurs gave Chelsea earlier this season would come back to haunt Mauricio Pochettino’s team.
“I think the defeat against Tottenham at White Hart Lane will give them extra focus – it’s got to be Chelsea for me,” said Murphy.
Tottenham produced arguably their best attacking performance of the season in their 5-3 win against the Blues in North London.
It was a performance which left a few worries at the back, but Spurs showed what they are capable of when everything clicks at the top of the team.
Chelsea will head into the final as favourites because of their dominant league position, but the result showed that Tottenham can compete in high pressure situations against the best teams.
Jose Mourinho will most likely try and fire up his side ahead of the game by doing as Murphy suggests and using the defeat as motivation.
Whether Tottenham can produce a repeat of the free flowing and attacking football they produced in that contest against the Blues remains to be seen. It will be difficult, but it’s not impossible.
