Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger denies Mikel Arteta contract renewal reports

The Spaniard's agent said he had signed a new deal at the club this week.

Arsenal have been busy this week, securing the signature of Gabriel Paulista from Villarreal. Not only that, but it was also reported that club captain Mikel Arteta had agreed a new deal at the club.

However, that does not seem to be the case.

Arsene Wenger confirmed in his press conference today that while a new deal for the impressive Francis Coquelin was imminent, no such announcement was ready for the Spaniard.

Arteta's current deal expires in the summer and the news he had signed a new deal came from his agent two days ago. Sky Sports reported he had signed a one-year extension before his agent, Inaki Ibanez, appeared to tell FootMercato that Arteta had signed a one-year extension.

Arteta is currently out of action after undergoing surgery on his injured ankle earlier this month. The Arsenal skipper has struggled to maintain his fitness this season, which has seen him play just 12 games this season.

What does this mean for Arteta?

The 2011 signing from Everton is 32-years-old, so would only be offered a one-year extension by the club and considering his recent injury record, it is fair to say that Arsenal would be wise to have reservations on giving him a new deal.

The reports that he was staying and the agents admission though seemed fairly reputable. Therefore the chances are that an offer will be on the table come the summer, even if for now a gun has been jumped.
