Tottenham fans react on Twitter to Mousa Dembele's performance

Tottenham fans were thrilled with Mousa Dembele's performance against Sheffield United.

Mousa Dembele repaid the faith in Mauricio Pochettino's team selection by starring in Tottenham's Capital One Cup semi-final second leg.

The Belgian was picked behind Harry Kane in a position often occupied by Christian Eriksen, with the Dane playing out wide instead.

Dembele showed why the decision was a shrewd one, and it was no coincidence Spurs began to struggle after he went off injured in the 65th minute.

During his time on the pitch at Bramall Lane, he created three goalscoring opportunities, more than any Tottenham player managed during the whole game.

Playing further forward than usual he completed 79 per cent of his passes, and made one tackle and one interception.

What did Tottenham learn?

Dembele showed his manager that he has a trustworthy option as an alternative to Eriksen through the middle.

Eriksen's display was not overly negatively affected by playing out wide, scorer of two goals, with five shots in total, although his one chance created was low by his standards.

Yet with Andros Townsend and Aaron Lennon clearly failing to convince Pochettino on the evidence of the season so far, it's an intriguing option and gives Dembele an increased shelf-life at the club.

He has lost his place of in a deeper role, with Ryan Mason, Benjamin Stambouli and Nabil Bentaleb all preferred ahead of him, and his display was exactly what he needed.
