Arsenal loanee made his debut for Villareal last night, playing a part in their quarter-final win over Getafe.
He joined his teammates for a post-game celebration photo in the dressing room, and told fans via Twitter he was delighted to be part of a 'historic night', promising this was 'just the beginning'.
Contento por debutar en una noche histórica para el club. ¡Esto apenas empieza!— Joel Campbell (@joel_campbell12) January 29, 2015
The Costa Rica international started the game, somewhat surprisingly, having barely played all season for Arsenal and only arriving in Spain days earlier.
Villareal won 2-0, and were not given reason to miss the defensive prowess of new Arsenal signing Gabriel Paulista.
Campbell was withdrawn after 62 minutes of the match, failing to make an impact on a great night to impress his new fans, and Arsenal supporters with the game televised on SkySports.
So what did fans think of his performance?
The feedback was not good, with viewers using Twitter to describe their disappointment at the loanee's display.
Some gave the attacker some slack, but others questioned whether he had the talent to make it at Arsenal upon his eventual return.
Now know why Campbell never got a look in at #AFC he doesn't pass the ball. Useless— Sean Perry (@sxp55555) January 29, 2015
Disappointing debut for Joel Campbell tonight for Villarreal. Understandable given lack of minutes, should get better #afc— Samuel Marsden (@samuelmarsden) January 29, 2015
Joel Campbell has been awful tonight. I know he's not played a proper game for a month but my god every pass and decision has been terrible— Ameē Ruszkai (@ameeruszkai) January 29, 2015
Joel Campbell pretty poor on his debut. I'm still not convinced he's good enough to play for us.— Jöshua (@HighburyJosh) January 29, 2015
Joel Campbell being totally anonymous again tonight. That's an hour of my life wasted.— Ben (@BenAFC) January 29, 2015
Joel Campbell subbed off in the 62nd minute. looked about as good as you’d expect someone would having been w/ a team for < a week.— FBJ (@FBJ0) January 29, 2015
Joel Campbell goes off for Villarreal. Quite disappointing debut. Poor decision from management to start him, just arrived at club hours ago— Sergi Domínguez (@FutbolSergi) January 29, 2015
Is the reaction fair?
Of course to judge him on the back of this game is not a fair reflection of Campbell's talents, for he is still adjusting to his new teammates, and has a real lack of match practice and sharpness.
Yet for some, it is an overall picture of concern that the attacker did not manage to break through at Arsenal despite being brought back into the first team picture over the summer.
Campbell promises the best is yet to come, and a few goals and assists will quickly change opinions and perceptions of his talent and potential to eventually crack it at Arsenal.
