Everton defender John Stones has told the Liverpool Echo how he used his time while suffering with an ankle problem.
Stones has only just returned to action and has revealed how he was told by Roberto Martinez to use his time wisely while he was away from the first team.
“Unfortunately I got this injury but it has made me stronger, more knowledgeable about the game,” said Stones.
“When I’ve been on the sidelines watching the game the gaffer told me to use the time wisely.”
The comments are encouraging for any Everton fans because they show a determination and willingness to learn.
It would have been easy for him to feel sorry for himself and slip into bad habits while he was injured, but he’s done something productive which should make him a better player.
Everton fans should see a Stones with a better ability to read the game and anticipate because he’s likely to have been watching the movements and patterns attacking players from Everton’s main rivals use.
He may also show a better understanding between his own position and those of his teammates and how he interacts when different defenders are in different positions.
The defence has arguably been Everton’s most difficult part of the team this season and a wiser John Stones with a greater knowledge and ability to read the game will only improve things.
