The 24-year-old has signed for Arsenal with Costa Rica international Joel Campbell heading the other way on a six-month loan deal.
Gabriel has made 127 club appearances to date – 50 for Villarreal and 77 for Esporte Clube Vitoria – and his task is now to try to get in the side ahead of current centre-back pairing Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker.
Gabriel has since posed in Arsenal’s shirt for a series of photographs published via the club’s official Twitter page.
He joins young midfielder Krystian Bielik in moving to the Emirates Stadium this month, after the teenager arrived from Legia Warsaw.
There is still time for Arsenal to get a little more business done this month but it remains to be seen if that will happen, even if an experienced defensive midfielder is top of many Gunners fans’ wish-lists.
