As confirmed by the BBC on Tuesday afternoon, Newcastle United have sold defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa to AS Roma for £5.5million.
The 25-year-old centre-back has been on loan at the Serie A side since September and now he has completed a permanent move away from St James’ Park.
The Frenchman made 46 appearances for Newcastle but he has been deemed surplus to requirements and will now look to build on the 20 games he has already had with Roma.
Yanga-Mbiwa started the season as a first-choice at the Italian club before a small injury saw him side-lined for one game and benched for a second.
He has since returned to the starting line-up, playing in recent 1-1 draws with Palermo and Fiorentina.
The move means Newcastle have seen a £1.2million loss on a player they signed for £6.7million from Montpellier.
After the announcement, we took to Twitter to see what Newcastle fans thought of the player’s departure and you can read a selection of what we found below:
So let me get this right, Mapou Yanga-Mbwia is being transferred to Roma because we aren't in need of a decent centre half #MikeWilliamson— Meesh (@meeshnufc3) January 27, 2015
Not arsed about Yanga Mbwia, he wasn't cut out for the league simple as that. When he played he was shocking.— Tom (@ToonTomm) January 27, 2015
We didn't see the best of Yanga-Mbwia at Newcastle, but I'd still take him all day over Mike Williamson. #NUFC— James Hocking© (@JimmyHock22) January 27, 2015
#Newcastle United. What is it with some players Bring them from obscurity to Newcastle United one of best supported clubs in Europe, then away— Jeffrey Muir (@muir_jeffrey) January 28, 2015
So Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa leaves for Roma. No great surprise but a big victim of the policy of bringing in players the head coach didn't want...— Mark Douglas (@MsiDouglas) January 27, 2015
