Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Brad Friedel has told London24 he feels DeAndre Yedlin has signed for the right club.
The American linked up with Spurs after his spell at Seattle in the MLS and Friedel, who has been at Spurs for a number of years, believes the North London club is the perfect venue for the American defender.
“For him, there’s no danger. He’s come in, he’s signed with a new club, Mauricio [Pochettino] is an excellent manager,” said Friedel.
“Tottenham’s an excellent club and we’ve got a lot of excellent players. So he’s just going to become one of those and he’s going to train as hard as he can and then when Mauricio thinks he’s ready he’ll put him in a game.”
Pochettino has a very solid recent track record when it comes to using and developing younger players.
Yedlin will have to work hard to get a chance at the club because there are arguably two players already ahead of him in the pecking order in the shape of Kyle Walker and Eric Dier, who also provides cover in the middle of the defence.
Pochettino has to make sure he deals with any difficulties when he’s first used in a Premier League game and the rest of the squad has to help him settle in effectively.
The quality at Tottenham is far higher than at Seattle and that in turn will help him to become a better all-round player.
Friedel is right to suggest Spurs are a good club for Yedlin because there is opportunity, a manager who has worked with similar young players and a squad, which is striving to achieve something in the form of Champions League football.
The only difficult decision is knowing when to let him loose.
