West Ham United have confirmed that 21-year-old midfielder Daniel Whitehead has terminated his contract with the club.
The player’s deal was due to expire in June but he has now left Upton Park early.
Whitehead began his senior career at Stockport County where he made 60 appearances, scoring six goals and providing eight assists, but following his move to West Ham he managed only one first-team appearance – which came against Nottingham Forest in last season’s FA Cup.
The Hammers suffered a humiliating 5-0 defeat that day and Whitehead has failed to build on that outing, making do with five under-21 appearances this season and 25 since he arrived at Upton Park.
The contract has been terminated with immediate effect and the club wished him well for the future on their official Twitter account on Wednesday afternoon.
It remains to be seen where Whitehead will continue his career but his previous performances for Stockport suggest he should be able to find a new club sooner rather than later.
