Manchester United's Under-21 side took on arch-rivals Liverpool at Leigh Sports Village last night, with goalkeeper Victor Valdes undoubtedly the main focus of attention.
The recent arrival on a free transfer has not yet played for the first team, as he continues his recovery from a very serious knee injury.
But he is said to be back to 100 per cent fitness and looked to be pretty sharp in the sticks against the Liverpool youngsters.
United's team contained plenty of top names. The likes of Nick Powell, Tyler Blackett and Anderson all featured in the game - as well as Jesse Lingard, Andreas Pereira and Saidy Janko.
But it was another first-teamer who netted the winner. After Jerome Sinclair scored the goal for Liverpool, answering the opener from Powell, it was Paddy McNair who scored the winning strike in the 47th minute.
He smashed home a wonderful strike to win the game for United with an excellently placed right foot strike into the bottom corner.
McNair has of course been a centre-back in the first-team for much of this season. Seemingly coming from nowhere, McNair was a midfield player for most of his early days, but has featured at the heart of United's defence for 10 games this season.
However, with this finish, it looks like he should be at the higher end of the pitch more often than he has been for the club.
