Southampton defender Jose Fonte has been speaking to the club’s official website about the side’s remarkable season and their ambitions for the rest of the campaign.
The Saints are currently third in the Premier League with 42 points from 22 games played, and while many expected the club to struggle following a summer that saw a number of players depart, manager Ronald Koeman has done a remarkable job.
Southampton are in possession of some of the most exciting talent in England and there is no reason they cannot hold firm in a fight for a Champions League place that could go down to the wire.
Fonte certainly believes they have what it takes to succeed, as he said in his latest interview.
“We just want to keep winning,” he said. “I can tell you that we will fight until the last drop of sweat to keep this position and to keep improving.
“This group of players started believing a long time ago.”
Fonte has made 28 appearances for Southampton so far this season, the club captain missing only one game due to suspension.
He has formed a truly wonderful defensive partnership with summer loan signing Toby Alderweireld and they have gone a long way to helping the side to some unforgettable results.
Reflecting on the season to date, Fonte highlighted the recent draw with Chelsea as a key moment in their season.
A run of defeats suggested the wheels were about to come off for Koeman’s side, but they drew 1-1 against Jose Mourinho’s side and Fonte said, “I think that game was probably the turning point in our team starting to believe we can compete against anyone.”
