Report: Newcastle target move for Jorge Mere before window closes

Newcastle Celebration

Newcastle United are looking to use their Spanish links more often.

Newcastle United are hoping to complete the signing of Spanish centre-back Jorge Mere before the close of the January transfer window, according to a report in the Chronicle.

Mere, who currently plays for Sporting Gijon, has caught the eye of the club's scouts and they are closing on a deal to bring him to St. James' Park.

Mere is still only 17-years-old, but he has made eight appearances for Sporting Gijon already this campaign and his talents have not gone unnoticed.

Capped up to under-19 level by Spain, the technically adept centre-back has emerged as one of the country's top talents in his position and Newcastle feel he could be a star of the future.

The Magpies have good links in Spain, as shown by the transfer of Ayoze Perez from Tenerife last summer, and they are hoping to utilise their contacts more frequently.

David Concha is all set to join Newcastle from Racing Santadar, according to the same report, and it appears that Mere could follow him to Tyneside.

Newcastle are placing plenty of emphasis on buying top, young talent and they have also been linked with 18-year-old MK Dons midfielder Dele Alli by the Daily Mail.
