The Daily Echo has reported that Southampton manager Ronald Koeman is battling with a dilemma over striker Graziano Pelle.
Following the news that Shane Long will be out of action for around six weeks, the paper claims Koeman is undecided over whether to gamble on Pelle staying fit and available or whether to draft in an attacking option before the transfer window closes.
On the one hand, Pelle looks well suited to leading the club in the Premier League and he’s played well since moving to St Marys.
On the other hand, if he picks up an injury problem or is suspended for any period of time, Koeman’s options in terms of replacing him are limited.
The danger and disadvantage for the Saints if they now go after a player in the transfer market is that clubs know they need a signing and that automatically pushes prices up.
A loan deal for a forward is possible, but that in itself restricts the options available to the boss and he may not be able to sign the quality of player he’s looking for.
