The former Real Madrid midfielder is currently a free agent after a spell in Russia, and was linked strongly with a move to Scottish champions Celtic at the end of last year by The Mail.
There's a chance now he could come to make Ronny Deila's side regret not taking up the option to sign him.
Diarra's agent Marijo Knez told the Italian website: "We are always in contact with Inter and this will not change even if the operation is not done. It is football and you have to always move forward.
"Is Inter first choice? There is no first, second or third choice, because each option should be respected. Logically we encounter in life in situations where we feel more comfortable. Inter, it is no secret, would be very good."
Having been a free agent since his release by Lokomotiv Moscow last Autumn, it's unclear how urgent the Italian side feel signing the midfielder is, but they would want to get him signed in time to register him for the Europa League clashes in February.
Knez went onto confirm he is waiting for Inter to make their final decision, and it certainly appears from his comments, he would be more than happy if the Italian side decided to bring him on board.
Inter are struggling in Serie A at present, sitting in 11th place, and it would not be a surpise if Roberto Mancini continued to add new faces ahead of the Europa League clashes.
