The BBC confirmed the news yesterday that Newcastle United have asked John Carver to remain in charge of the side for the rest of the season.
The caretaker boss stepped in when Alan Pardew headed off to Crystal Palace and he now faces the prospect of trying to engineer a top half of the table finish for the Premier League giants.
It’s a great opportunity for him to show why he should be offered the job on a long term basis, because he has several months to prove his managerial qualities.
Whether Newcastle take that decision remains to be seen but the club now have no excuses for not appointing the right man to take the team forward on a permanent basis.
Lee Charnley, the club’s managing director, has had the pressure lifted from his shoulders to make an appointment quickly and he doesn’t have any excuses for now not examining every single small detail about the candidates for the job.
Carver is a safe option because he knows the club, he knows the players and they will be used to his style on the training pitch and also the formations that he likes to use in the middle of key games.
Newcastle have just slipped inside the bottom half of the table and Carver’s initial job will be to get the side back inside the top ten.
It will then be a case of whether the team can consolidate and push for a position in the top six, which opens up the possibility of European football for next season, which would further Carver’s chances of getting the job on a long term basis.
Whether he gets anywhere near the top six remains to be seen, but it’s important the side start looking forwards and quickly.
Here’s what Newcastle fans on Twitter made of the decision.

Carver is till end of season. It only till Frank De Boer is available. How do we lack ambition if De Boer is who we are waiting for? #nufc— Philip (@nufcphilip) January 26, 2015
