Manchester United transfer round-up: Player told he can leave; Strootman injury setback

A select round-up of the latest news relating to Manchester United

According to a report from ESPN, Manchester United have told midfielder Darren Fletcher he is free to leave the club this month.

The Scotland international has been used sparingly in recent months, despite starting the campaign as the vice-captain at Old Trafford.

That role has since gone to Michael Carrick, and the latest report claims he has been told he can move on a free transfer with his current contract set to expire in the summer.

West Ham United, West Bromwich Albion and Valencia have all been linked with the player, with the Hammers reportedly in the box-seat for his signature.

In other news, the Sun reports that United’s alleged pursuit of Kevin Strootman could be put on hold after the Roma midfielder sustained a knee injury.

The Netherlands international recently returned to first-team action after a terrible injury robbed him of a World Cup place and game-time both last season and this.

He has since returned in fine style, but any move could now be delayed until the summer at the earliest, and perhaps longer if the Italian side hold firm on a player widely regarded as one of the best central midfielders in Europe.
