Liverpool defensive legend Jamie Carragher says Mario Balotelli is not to blame for Chelsea goal

The former Liverpool star says Balotelli did his job considering Liverpool were zonal marking.

Chelsea are through to the Capital One Cup final after defeating Liverpool 1-0 after extra time at Stamford Bridge. A goal from Branislav Ivanovic saw Chelsea secure a 2-1 aggregate triumph against Liverpool and book their place in the final against either Tottenham Hotspur or Sheffield United.

There is little doubt who the enemy of the game was for Liverpool. Mario Balotelli found himself under scrutiny after the game by many a punter, because of his defensive attributes.

He appeared to be at fault for the Ivanovic goal. He seemed to be marking the Serbian, who then ghosted in behind him to head home the eventual winner.

However, he has now been backed up by a legendary Liverpool defender.

Jamie Carragher was often the hero at the back for Liverpool in his Anfield career, which spanned 23 years and 737 appearances. He took to Twitter last night to ensure the public that baying for Balotelli's blood for the Chelsea goal was unfair - as he was marking zonally.

He claims that, as soon as Diego Costa ran into his zone, Balotelli was correct to pick him up, therefore not putting him at fault for the goal.

Although, Carragher would not be able to back up Balotelli's attacking performance as he once again blundered in front of goal.
