The London Evening Standard has given an update on the situation surrounding Gabriel Paulista’s proposed move to Arsenal.
The 24-year-old Brazilian centre-back will reportedly have a medical in London today as his £13.4million move from Villarreal nears its completion.
The report goes on to claim that Arsenal are confident the player will receive a work permit despite not meeting the criteria of playing 75 per cent of his country’s matches over the last two years.
Despite that, the Gunners are reportedly hopeful of a similar situation to the ones that saw Ryo Miyaichi and Eduardo da Silva handed work permits on the basis of being players of what is termed “the highest calibre”.
Paulista has made 50 appearances for Villarreal and previously turned out 77 times for Esporte Clube Vitoria.
Assuming his Arsenal move is completed, he will add more strength in depth to a back-line that was heavily affected by injuries and suspensions earlier this season.
Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny are currently Arsenal’s first-choice centre-back pairing but Paulista could ultimately shake things up at the Emirates Stadium.
