Sony Online Entertainment's MMO FPS set a new world record this weekend, seeing 1,158 players battle it out.

A couple of weeks ago we heard that some Planetside 2 players were hoping to set a new Guiness World Record for "Most Players Online in an FPS Battle". Well, according to the event organisers, Planetside Battles, they smashed the record with a total of 1,158 players online.

During the battle there were a total of 53,729 kills, 3,822 team kills, 31 base captures, and 5,089 vehicles destroyed.

The original record holder was the first Planetside game, but in 2012 Man vs Machine took the record with a total of 999 players online.

A tweet from Planetside 2 producer David Carey on Saturday showed him with the record certificate following the event. "This is your award", tweeted Carey, referring to Planetside 2 players.
