In an exclusive interview with Goal.com, Inter Milan president Erick Thohir has been speaking about signing Xherdan Shaqiri ahead of reported suitors Liverpool.
The Swiss international recently completed a move from Bayern Munich to the Serie A side, despite claims (from Sky Sports among others) Liverpool wanted to sign the hugely talented international. And now Thohir has spoken about why he feels his side beat Brendan Rodgers’ club to the deal.
“Inter are a big club, no different from Liverpool, just the same,” Thohir is quoted as saying.
“That’s why I’m not surprised that Shaqiri chose to sign for Inter.”
Shaqiri made 81 appearances for Bayern prior to his move, scoring 17 goals and providing 19 assists in that time.
He had previously made 130 appearances for FC Basel, the club where he made his name.
Shaqiri was not really given the opportunities his talent deserved at the Allianz Arena due to the considerable array of talent available at the Bundesliga giants. But he is likely to be given far more chances at Inter.
He had the innate ability to thrive at Anfield had he made the much-mooted move to Merseyside, but ultimately it was not to be, with Thohir believing Inter and Liverpool are just as big as each other.
