Newcastle United defender Fabricio Coloccini has told the Chronicle that Ayoze Perez can be a 'top player' for the side if he keeps performing to the standard that he has shown since joining this summer.
His form, which has seen him bag five goals already, has not gone unnoticed either and Coloccini is hoping that he can fulfil his potential at St. James' Park.
“It is a big jump," Coloccini said to the Chronicle. "But his job is to play in the Premier League now and against the biggest teams in the world.
“It’s important he keeps that level. If he can, he will be a top, top player for us.”
Perez went through a purple patch earlier in season, scoring three goals in the same amount of matches, which alerted people to his talents.
A clinical finisher, who also has masses of technical ability, the 21-year-old has all the characteristics to become one of the marquee strikers in the Premier League, but he will need to keep developing.
At the moment there are still weaknesses in the forward's game and his run of just two goals in his past 12 games proves that there is room for improvement.
Perez will still be very happy with the way his debut season as gone so far, though, and Coloccini's thoughts about him having the potential to become a major star are reflected by supporters' feelings about the Spaniard, who looks one of their most exciting talents in recent times.
