According to a story from Manchester United’s official website, young striker Ashley Fletcher is set to get more chances for the club’s under-21 side following Will Keane’s loan move to Sheffield Wednesday.
With Keane temporarily moving on once again, and James Wilson very much part of first-team plans at Old Trafford these days, Fletcher has been tipped to get more chances for Warren Joyce’s side by the man himself.
In an interview with ManUtd.com, Joyce said the following when asked if he hoped the 19-year-old grasped this opportunity:
“Yes, for sure, because Will has gone out on loan and Fletch will be involved now and staking a claim.
“He has progressed well since the start of the season as he had a bad injury over the summer, but he’s come on a ton really with the work we have done in the last couple of months.”
Fletcher impressed prior to his injury last season, scoring nine goals in just 10 matches for United’s under-18s, but this is another step up for a player who will know he has plenty to do if he ultimately wants to break into Louis van Gaal’s first-team.
He may be the same age as Wilson but the two players’ circumstances are currently miles apart, and yet Yorkshire-born Fletcher now has the chance to show he can make the grade at under-21 level, and from there, who knows what the future may bring?
