First off, some Leeds United fans are still wondering why they sold the 25-year-old striker to Fulham on Deadline Day last August. Leeds have struggled aerially in the Championship and the target man would certainly have boosted the Elland Road outfit in that department.
Smith failed to find the back of the net against West Ham but proved a nuisance all game long, drawing praise from the likes of Danny Murphy, Trevor Sinclair and Andrew Cole in the BBC studio.
Naturally, plenty of Leeds fans suggest Smith would never start for Neil Redfearn's side and are calling for the other camp of Leeds supporters to stop looking back on the sale of the target man. But the fact remains that that other camp exists.
For Fulham, reaction has been even more mixed. Unlike Leeds, the Cottagers have the chance to hold onto Smith in the long term. And many Fulham fans were impressed enough with the 25-year-old's display v West Ham to demand a recall right now.
Many, though, prefer the options of another ex-Leeds striker Ross McCormack and Cauley Woodrow up front. There is also doubt as to whether Smith would make Fulham's starting XI regularly enough - and whether the west London side cross the ball enough for him to fit into their style of play.
This was a good performance from the striker, though, and West Ham were certainly troubled by Smith's quality in the air. Here's a selection of the best reaction to his display on Twitter:
I think #LUFC could do with a centre forward like Matt Smith oh wait— Nicholas Smith (@NicholasSm1th) January 25, 2015
Seeing the BBC big up Matt Smith upsets me. How and why we let him go still baffles me. #LUFC— RightintheGaryKellys (@RITGK) January 25, 2015
Selling Matt Smith goes down as one of the worse decisions I've seen in a very long time #lufc— Robbo (@Ste_Robbo87) January 25, 2015
Would take Matt Smith back any day of the week. No need to sell him in the first place. #lufc— Michael Evans (@michael_eevans) January 25, 2015
