Video: Ex-Manchester United man Shinji Kagawa misses Japan penalty

The Borussia Dortmund attacker hit the post with his spot-kick, with UAE progressing to the Asian Cup semi-finals as a result.

Former Manchester United attacking midfielder Shinji Kagawa missed the decisive penalty as his country Japan were eliminated from the Asian Cup yesterday.

The Borussia Dortmund star took his nation’s fifth spot-kick after their clash with UAE went to penalties and drilled his effort against the post, as can be seen below.

Keisuke Honda also failed to hit the target with his effort, which saw the defending Asian Cup champions crash out of the competition in Australia.

Kagawa had been in good form in the tournament, which will have come as something of a sea change for the Asian star, who is struggling to find his feet back at Signal Iduna Park after rejoining Dortmund in the summer.

The Japanese attacker was on United’s books for two years, but only started 31 Premier League games during his time at Old Trafford.

Kagawa was a victim of Wayne Rooney’s form, with the Asian superstar largely having to play in a wide role rather than in his preferred number ten position during his time in England.
