Former Manchester United hero Cristiano Ronaldo received the 9th red card of his career after uncharacteristically lashing out during Real Madrid’s 2-1 win at Cordoba.
The Portuguese winger has made the front pages in Spain a number of times this season and he will be sure to be on there again tomorrow, but for all the wrong reasons.
The recently named Ballon d’Or winner cut a frustrated figure during Madrid’s tricky encounter at Cordoba as the visitors struggled to break the hosts down.
With just under ten minutes remaining the scores locked at 1-1, Ronaldo evidently snapped and an experienced a couple of minutes of madness.
After getting away with a blatant attempted punch during a tussle at a corner, an ensuing free-kick also caused mayhem as the 29-year-old hacked at Edimar Fraga while raising his to the left-back’s face.
The referee had little option other than to flash a straight red card, with Ronaldo already on his way to the dugout presumably acknowledging what he had done.
Fortunately for the world’s best player, Gareth Bale scored a last-minute winner from the penalty spot to preserve Los Blancos’ lead at the top of the La Liga table.
He has broken a number of records since trading the Red Devils for the Santiago Bernabeu in 2009, but in Spain he has arguably become more petulant – receiving five of his career nine red cards at Madrid.
