Liverpool forward Fabio Borini thinks success in a cup competition would see the side progress to the next stage of their development, according to the club’s official website.
The Reds take on Bolton at Anfield on Saturday evening, looking to reach the 5th round of the FA Cup, before taking on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the second leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final.
Now, Italian forward Borini has expressed his belief that success in either one of those tournaments, or potentially in the Europa League later on in the season, would provide them with the perfect platform to launch the next stage of their development.
"Last year I had the fortune to be in the final of the Capital One Cup [with Sunderland],” he said.
"The FA Cup is a hard cup to get to the final of because you play so many games against many different kinds of teams. You cannot expect anything. I know how important it is in England to win the FA Cup and it can take you to the next stage. Winning a trophy for Liverpool at this stage is very important."
Before success in the League Cup or Europa League though, Liverpool must overcome a resurgent Bolton at Anfield first. Neil Lennon’s side are currently 15th in the Championship table, having surged out of the relegation places since the former Celtic manager took charge in October last year.
His first three months in charge save them rise ten places from bottom of the league and Borini knows Liverpool will have to be on the top of their game to win at Anfield.
“It is always hard to play against a lower-division club in England,” added Borini.
"It's easier from their point of view to come to Anfield and play because they just need to enjoy it. We have to do the job and win the game.
