The manager of reported Arsenal target Gabriel Paulista has been speaking about the prospect of the player leaving Villarreal this month in quotes published by the Daily Star.
The La Liga club’s boss Marcelino is quoted as saying, “Everything points towards the negotiations going in one direction, but until then he’s still ours.”
Paulista is a 24-year-old Brazilian centre-back who has made 50 appearances for his current club and previously turned out 77 times for Esporte Clube Vitoria.
The latest report claims Arsenal will use Costa Rica international Joel Campbell as a makeweight in the deal, with the 22-year-old allegedly keen on the move having failed to make a mark at the Emirates Stadium this season.
Arsenal showed earlier this season that they can do with some defensive reinforcements, after a number of injuries left them short at the back and having to play full-backs as centre-backs with varying degrees of success.
But the latest report suggests Arsenal could be on the verge of adding a quality centre-half to their squad, and one who is unlikely to be happy to sit on the bench, meaning Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny may have to up their games.
