The 19-year-old striker has been with the Gunners since the age of six, progressing through the club’s youth teams and earning rave reviews for his goal scoring feats.
During the year of 2014, he spent two spells out on loan at League One clubs Brentford and Coventry City in a bid to aid his experience at first-team level.
Despite failing to find the net, his rapid rise in the game has been recognised and Wenger now admits that he is ready for first-team action at the Emirates.
“I believe Chuba Akpom is ready to play now. He’s a goalscorer with power,” Wenger told Arsenal.com.
“At the moment he’s a bit behind in the pecking order because we have Alexis, Welbeck, Giroud, Campbell and Sanogo who are all older with more experience.”
“Walcott will also come back so it’s unfortunate for Chuba at the moment. For me though, looking at him in training, he’s ready now.”
Due to the strong competition for places in attack in North London, it’s unlikely to see Akpom establish himself as a first-tram regular anytime in the near future.
However, he did make his first Premier League start of the season on New Year’s Day as he came off the bench in the defeat at Southampton, proving that he has received the confidence of his boss.
The England U20 international would benefit from a further loan spell, and there will certainly be a number of clubs at League One and Championship level queuing up to take him on.
