From Silvio Maric and Daniel Cordone through to Andreas Andersson – Newcastle United’s Premier League history is littered with short-lived foreign imports that failed to settle in the north east, though few are likely to compare to Facundo Ferreyra.
Brought in on loan from Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk, hopes were high for the 23-year-old nicknamed "Chucky" by some fans.
A previous spell in Europe had been largely successful for the Argentine, who managed six goals in 13 outings for Shakhtar before concerns for his safety prompted the forward to push for a move away from the club.
Prior to his move to the continent, the striker also shone in his homeland, scoring 16 goals in 22 outings for Velez Sarsfield to earn a big move abroad.
But any Magpies fans hoping to see the South American in action for the Toon have been left disappointed, with the striker failing to make a single Premier League appearance for the club.
There has been the occasional mention of the Argentine among the substitutes for a couple of League Cup clashes but other than that the striker has made no impact whatsoever.
A report carried by the Chronicle lifted the lid of the situation back in September with a source close the club telling the news provider:
"He hasn’t even managed to get a regular game for the reserves.
"And there have been a few raised eyebrows in training.
"But he came to the club as a friend of the captain (Fabricio) Coloccini and isn’t thought to be the manager’s pick."
Since then there have been whispers that the forward could be moved on come January, with several sources claiming Serie A side Genoa are keen on bringing the 23-year-old to Italy as part of a temporary switch until the end of the season.
While that interest appears to have cooled in recent weeks, a fresh report from the Chronicle claims that Newcastle could now be considering cancelling the loan deal in a bid to free up an extra space in the club’s 25-man Premier League squad.
Who takes up that place remains to be seen but one man already being linked with a move to the north east is Pierre-Michel Lasogga.
Currently with Hamburg, Bild has claimed that Die Rothosen could be willing to listen to offers for the 23-year-old who only signed for the club permanently last summer after impressing during a season-long loan at the club from Hertha Berlin.
Lasogga managed 13 goals in 20 outings during that campaign but has so far found the net just twice in 16 matches for the Bundesliga outfit and could yet move to Newcastle in the coming weeks.
For Ferreyra, meanwhile, a move elsewhere beckons.
