Former Wolves goalkeeper Matt Murray moved to try to clear up comments he made on television about Leeds United.
Retired goalkeeper Matt Murray managed to upset several Leeds United fans with comments made about defender Giuseppe Bellusci.
The tackle was clearly outside the box yet a penalty was awarded anyway, and while after watching the replay he suggested the spot-kick was not technically correct, he felt Bellusci's rash challenge merited it regardless.
He said: "I think that's outside the box, and the full backs covering. In a way he deserves to be (sent off), it was cynical, he knew what he was doing."
Bellusci was dismissed but Leeds got a bit of luck, with Bournemouth missing from 12 yards, and the home side recorded a 1-0 victory.
Murray copped some flak on Twitter for his comments from fans who felt his comments on Bellusci were unfair, and attempted to reason and get his points across individually, before urging fans to calm down, and going on to complement the club and clarify his comments.
Leeds fans need to chill. You got a great 3pts through a wonder strike. Worked hard but rhode your luck at times. Was a red but not a penalty— Matt Murray (@MattMurray20) January 21, 2015
I can see why ref gave pen though. Was cynical foul as they come though. Pen was missed so now you can build on this win against Lge leaders— Matt Murray (@MattMurray20) January 21, 2015
Saw Leeds play well at Blackburn & lose. Played well at Bolton & drew. Should be buzzing they got the luck and a vital win.— Matt Murray (@MattMurray20) January 21, 2015
His quick response and willingness to engage should be commended, and whether Leeds fans agree with him over the red card or not -their club face seeing defender Giuseppe Bellusci facing a spell out of the side for suspension as a result of the referee's decision.
