Indeed, West Ham striker Andy Carroll revealed in an interview with the site that Downing has compared himself to the Manchester United legend, with his team-mates promptly giving him some 'stick' for his revelation.
Downing was one of three goalscorers (including Carroll) on Sunday afternoon as West Ham beat Hull City 3-0.
But the suggestion that the 30-year-old is anything like Manchester United assistant manager Giggs was treated with nothing but humour, Carroll says:
"Stewie is a fantastic player. He was hinting that he's the new Ryan Giggs, which the lads were giving him stick for! He's a great player and it suits him very nice in that hole."
Naturally, the Hammers' main threat up front was still full of praise for Downing, who has gone some way to restoring his reputation this season.
The midfielder already looked a better player at West Ham last campaign than during his miserable Liverpool days. This term, however, Downing has found a new lease of life in a more central role.
Comparing himself to Giggs, though? Manchester United fans will probably side with Downing's team-mates on that one!
