Why Liverpool should move for Napoli midfielder Gokhan Inler

The Switzerland international is out of favour at San Paolo and would add an array of attributes to the Anfield outfit’s midfield.

With Steven Gerrard set to leave Liverpool in the summer and Lucas Leiva’s future a constant source of speculation, central midfielders will presumably be high up Brendan Rodgers’ wishlist in his recruitment drive this month and in the summer.

The Mirror stated last March that the Anfield side held an interest in Napoli midfielder Gokhan Inler, but nothing came of the rumours; how much truth was in them remains to be seen.

However, with the Reds in need of accomplished and rounded midfield players, the Merseyside club could do much worse than look to Inler now.

The Switzerland international has not been an automatic first choice for Rafa Benitez at the Serie A side this term, with the former Udinese man only starting eight league games to date.

The experienced midfield enforcer has a number of attributes that would go far in the unenviable task of replacing Gerrard

An extensive range of passing, positional discipline, toughness in the tackle, a booming shot from long range and a resolve to work hard for his team would be welcomed by the Kop, with Inler a top-class midfield general on his day.

The 30-year-old may not be the all-action midfielder to replace Gerrard in the long run, but his signing would certainly increase competition for places, complement potential boiler room partner Jordan Henderson and act as an upgrade on a one-dimensional Lucas.
