Tony Pulis has admitted in the Birmingham Mail that Wigan Athletic winger Callum McManaman is a player on his January wish list.
The West Bromwich Albion boss says bids have been lodged for four players, with the Baggies looking to step up their pursuit of fresh faces.
Pulis believes that pace on the flanks is an attribute he needs to add at The Hawthorns, allowing his side to pose a greater threat from wide positions and get more quality deliveries into the box.
McManaman would bring those qualities to the Midlands and is a player with Premier League experience.
Wigan’s struggles in the Championship this season may force them into a sale, but they have made it clear that the 23-year-old will not come cheap – with Malky Mackay telling the Wigan Evening Post as much.
Pulis must decide how much he is willing to pay for a second-tier performer, especially one that has not been setting the world alight at that level.
He told the Birmingham Mail: “We have had bids for four different players go in. We will just wait and see.
“You put bids in and you see what the clubs want and then we will take a view. It’s not just him (McManaman) there are three or four other people that we have asked and enquired about. Then we will take a view what we think is value for money and what is right for us.
“Some of them haven’t come back to us, some are still negotiating. But we will take a view when we are in a position to assess what we’ve got and what we haven’t got and we will go from there.
“There are certain areas on the pitch within the group that we have to get to enable us to be better. We do need a bit of pace out wide without a question of doubt."
|Team||Total Att Assist||Goals||Total Cross||Accurate Cross||Appearances||Mins Played|
|Stéphane Sessegnon||West Brom||28||1||21||2||21||1,391|
|Chris Brunt||West Brom||27||0||96||25||19||1,545|
|Saido Berahino||West Brom||17||9||19||1||22||1,653|
McManaman is a talented performer and will have seen Wigan’s poor form impact on his numbers.
There are, however, figures in the Opta statistics above that will have caught the eye of Pulis.
Goals from midfield are vital to any side, with it important to spread that particular load, and McManaman’s return for the Latics suggests that he could be a useful addition, even if he is not the most accurate with crosses or the most creative when it comes to providing assists.
