According to a report in the Shields Gazette, Newcastle United have offered a professional contract to promising youngster Callum Roberts.
The 17-year-old forward is currently on loan at Gateshead, but due to the details of his youth loan he is also able to represent the Magpies’ under-21s during his temporary stint away from St James’ Park.
The paper claims Roberts has been offered a professional deal after impressing and that he is keen to commit his long-term future to the club.
This season Newcastle have shown they are willing to give youth a chance in their first-team with some outstanding results, not least in the form of Jak Alnwick and Rolando Aarons.
Roberts made his senior debut for the Magpies in their FA Cup third round match against Leicester City earlier this month, appearing for the last 11 minutes but unable to prevent them from losing 1-0.
He has also made 19 appearances for Newcastle’s under-21 side, scoring three goals to date.
