Report: Derby in talks with Chelsea over international midfielder

Chelsea are reportedly ready to recall Christian Atsu from Everton and send him to Championship promotion hopefuls Derby County.

According to the Sun, an angry and frustrated Chelsea are set to recall Christian Atsu early from his loan spell at Everton in order to send him to Championship promotion hopefuls Derby County.

The 23-year-old, who is currently away with the Ghana national team at the African Cup of Nations, has endured a torrid time at Everton and despite their poor form in the Premier League has struggled to breakthrough into Roberto Martinez’s plans.

This season, the former Porto player has managed to accumulate only 71 minutes of Premier League football with the Toffees and has only played the full 90 minutes once in his loan spell, coming in a 3-0 defeat away at Swansea City in the League Cup on 23rd September.

In his last appearance for the Liverpool-based club, on 22nd November, he was thrown on in injury time to help secure a 2-1 lead against high-flyers West Ham United at Goodison Park and since then hasn’t been seen again.

At the moment, the Ghanaian international is currently in Equatorial Guinea taking part in the African Cup of Nations where in the opening game he helped his side to an early lead.

The pacy forward was brought down in box within the first 15 minutes of the game and the resulting penalty was scored to give his side the lead.

Nevertheless, a dominant Senegal performance proved too much and Atsu came away from the game on the losing side despite being subbed off when the score was 1-1.

The report indicates Derby manager Steve McClaren is willing to wait on the Chelsea attacker, who is touted as the ideal replacement to Liverpool winger Jordon Ibe, as he looks to improve his side in order to ensure they don’t miss out on promotion like last season.
