The 21-year-old centre-back turned out for the Black Cats’ Under-21 side against their Norwich City counterparts at the Academy of Light on Monday.
The game ended in a goalless draw and, according to The Sun, Ajayi “impressed” in the encounter.
Sunderland have looked vulnerable at the back this season, but manager Gus Poyet recently ruled out making any more signings in the January transfer window, as reported by BBC Sport (click here to read more).
Ajayi has been in Arsenal’s matchday squads on three occasions this season, but the Nigerian is untested at the highest level.
Perhaps that is why the youngster was playing for the Sunderland Under-21 side on Monday.
It will be interesting to see if Sunderland do sign Ajayi. The defender’s contract at Arsenal runs out at the end of the season, and his prospects of first-team football at the Gunners look very slim.
Even if Sunderland do recruit Ajayi, one should not expect him to solve all their defensive problems.
The youngster will need to be given time to acclimatise himself to the Premier League and cannot be expected to give instant results.
