Newcastle United defender Daryl Janmaat has explained to the Chronicle his belief that the returning Siem de Jong will make the side stronger.
De Jong has been out of action with a knee injury and Janmaat believes his return will give the side a welcome boost.
“We have to try to reach as high as possible. For certain we are looking to finish in the top half of the table,” said the Dutchman.
“We have Siem to come back and other good players. It’s nice to know. They can make us stronger.”
De Jong will provide caretaker manager John Carver with a fresh option in midfield and his return will have the a similar impact to a new signing as he’s been out of the team for so long.
The challenge for de Jong is firstly, getting to stage where he can get back into the team and then staying fit once he’s back in the squad.
There is always the risk with any player returning from injury that they could cause a former problem to reoccur when they’re back in competitive match action.
Fingers crossed de Jong stays injury free for the rest of the season as Newcastle look to break into and consolidate in the top half of the table.
