Ian Wright has written in The Sun that Arsenal could still finish in the top three of the Premier League this season.
The Gunners are currently fifth in the league standings with 39 points from 22 matches, just a point behind fourth-placed Manchester United and only three behind Southampton, who are third.
Arsenal are on a good run of form at the moment and have won their last three competitive games without conceding a single goal.
The latest victory for Arsene Wenger’s side came on Sunday when they got the better of defending English champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
It was a truly brilliant performance from Arsenal, who deserved the 2-0 win, and Wright believes that his former team can end up third in the Premier League if they maintain the level they reached against the Citizens.
“If Arsenal had played like this since August, they would have been challenging for the title now,” Arsenal legend Wright wrote in The Sun.
“But Chelsea look to have the league sewn up. A 13-point gap is too big for Arsenal to close. City could still be caught and I fancy Arsenal to finish in the top three.
“First of all they have to make sure Sunday’s fantastic performance is not another false dawn. It is one result, a platform to build on. But they can’t let it be a one-off.”
While it would not be wise to get carried away based on one brilliant performance from Arsenal, it is very likely that the North London outfit could end the Premier League campaign in third place.
Louis van Gaal’s United appear to be slowing down, and although Southampton are still going strong, the Saints are only three points ahead of Arsenal.
Of course, the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Liverpool are very much in the running for a top-four finish, Arsenal do have a very good chance of finishing ahead of the trio.
What Wenger’s team now need to do is build on their performance against City.
