The Independent has reported that Arsenal will look to hand midfielder Francis Coquelin a new long term deal to stay at the club.
The move seems to have been prompted by his recent performances in the Arsenal midfield, with the Frenchman superb during the 2-0 win against Manchester City last week.
We’ve look at three key questions and initial reaction from Arsenal fans based on the report.
Does he deserve it?
In short, probably not because his impact has been short term for Arsenal. He’s been effective but he’s not been a key feature in the team throughout the season, only stepping up because of unavailable players in a key position.
How could it impact the club’s transfer plans?
Defensive and holding midfield is an area where a new player could have been targeted by Arsenal in the transfer market. However, Coquelin is only 23-years-old and could fill that role for the Gunners over the next few years, which could mean no need to go after a similar player.
How will it affect him?
It could go either way; it could inspire him or it could make him a little complacent. Hopefully from Arsenal’s point of view it will be the former and Arsene Wenger can use that to his advantage.
Here’s what Arsenal fans on Twitter have had to say over the prospect of a new deal for Coquelin.
Coquelin to get a new contract can only be a good thing for the club..hope this means Flamini is off in the summer— David (@DavidAFC68) January 20, 2015
Let's hope this Coquelin contract talk is just that...talk. Shows great promise but way too early. #premature— JoelTheWineGuy (@NonFlyingIceman) January 20, 2015
Coquelin in final year of his contract, massively put himself in the shop window. he'll probably walk out the door at the end of the season— Nat (@Silcox777) January 20, 2015
