After a shaky start at Old Trafford, the 24-year-old has become one of the Red Devils’ most valued players, and he has single-handedly won points for United this season. Playing behind a questionable defence has done little to dent his confidence, and he has arguably been the best ‘keeper in the Premier League this term.
However, the allures of Real Madrid may be too large to reject, and, even though a former Atletico prospect, De Gea could be tempted should Los Blancos make a concrete offer for him.
Yet, one former Madrid man doesn’t believe the reigning European champions need to sign De Gea, with two top class stoppers already on the books of the Bernabeu club. Iker Casillas and Keylor Navas are both turning out in Madrid at the moment, and former defender Ivan Helguera is confident no signing would usurp their places in the squad.
“I do not think Real Madrid need De Gea, or any 'keeper now,” the 39-year-old told Radio Estadio de Onda Cero, as quoted by Bernabeu Digital.
The two-time Champions League winner also commented on Bale, in light of the suggested swap-deal, and he labeled him as ‘magnificent’.
He added: “Bale seems to me an excellent player, magnificent.”
Despite all the rumours concerning De Gea’s potential departure from Old Trafford, the BBC have reported that talks are still ongoing between United and the ‘keeper regarding a new long-term contract to keep him in Manchester.
