Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville said Arsenal produced their best start for four years against Manchester City yesterday, while commentating on the game for Sky Sports.
Arsenal won the match 2-0 with an extremely professional away performance and Neville said live during the game, that he hadn’t seen anything similar from the Gunners for years.
“This is a really professional start to a match from Arsenal – This is the best I’ve seen them start a game for four years,” said Neville.
Arsenal have been criticised at times this season for being too open and attacking in big games, which has left them exposed defensively.
Neville himself has analysed on Arsenal’s defence for Sky’s Monday Night Football on several occasions, but he can’t help but have been impressed by Arsene Wenger’s team yesterday.
Arsenal were clearly wary of a quick start from City and they stayed compact as a defensive unit, dropping a bit deeper which made them much more difficult to get the better.
It’s important Wenger bottles up the performance yesterday and uses it as a blueprint for the rest of the campaign.
Arsenal are going to face different challenges against their rivals away from home over the rest of the season but if they mirror the good things they did yesterday, they won’t go far wrong during those games.
It was the perfect away performance; defensively solid, sensible passing, aggressive and cashing in when the opportunities came at the other end of the pitch.
