Guillem Balague has given an update following reports linking a Villarreal defender with a move to Arsenal, and Manchester United are said to be interested.
Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague has taken to Twitter to give an update on reported Arsenal target Gabriel Paulista.
The 24-year-old Brazilian currently plays for Spanish side Villarreal, and recent comments from the player have suggested the Gunners are looking to sign him to strengthen their back-line.
In comments published by the Mirror, Paulista said, “The subject is being discussed by my agent and the club. If I go to Arsenal it will be excellent. But if it’s not finalised then I am relaxed.”
Following those comments and the inevitable subsequent reports, regular Sky Sports pundit Balague has had his say, tweeting the following on Monday:
“Both (Manchester) United and Arsenal asked for Gabriel (Villarreal). They can only get him paying his €20m buyout clause.”
Paulista has made 28 appearances for the Spanish side this season and with a contract that runs until the summer of 2018 there is no reason for his current side to sell unless his reported release-clause is activated.
Both United and Arsenal are in need of defensive reinforcements, but it seems that after the player’s comments appeared to tip the balance in favour of Arsenal, the Gunners could still have competition if Louis van Gaal is prepared to fork out on an unexpected addition this month.
