Weekend Playlist: The Birth of Lightning

Final Fantasy XIII Vanille

Welcome to HITC’s weekly slot where we share the games we’re currently playing

I've been playing a few games this week and it's taken me a while to decide which one to write about this weekend. There has been the latest WWE game, Immortals, Football Manager Handheld and Telltale's Game of Thrones but I've decided to write about the game that's taken up most of my time, Final Fantasy XIII.

I started playing Final Fantasy XIII when it first came out and, if i'm honest, hated it. I didn't like the fighting style, prefering the older turn based system, the story didn't really grab me either. It is surprising then that I recently re-bought the game, forgetting I'd even played it.

What's more surprising is that this time around I'm really enjoying it, I've got used to the combat style I'm gripped by the story and I'm invested in the characters, even the ultra annoying Hope Estheim.

Now I'm not that far in, although I'm a lot further in that my previous attempt, so I can't comment on the whole game but the graphics are still impressive to this day, although the overdubbing often doesn't match the movement of the mouths, the fighting style is smooth and challenging and the character progression is surprising quick.

For those who don't know, Final Fantasy XIII tells the stories of Lightning, Snow, Sazh, Vanille and Hope, citizens of Cocoon who have come into contact with a mysterious power from the supposedly evil Pulse. Thrown together by circumstance they are transformed into magical l'Cie, tasked with saving Cocoon.

If you didn't understand that then I'm not surprised, as with all Final Fantasy games there is a huge amount of sub plot and intertwining element, making it extremely hard to explain what it's about without writing an essay.

I'm really looking forward to discovering the mysteries of Cocoon and seeing where the story takes me. I've been a big fan of the franchise since I played my first one, FF VIII back in 1999 on the PS One, and I know how addictive they can become. It's still early days but those familiar feeling are slowly returning, I'm just waiting to run into a Cactaur, love those guys.
