The former Spanish under-21 international now represents Equatorial Guinea.

The African Cup of Nations got under way yesterday, with last minute hosts Equatorial Guinea taking on Congo in the opening fixture.

Equatorial Guinea stood in for Morocco at the last minute after the North African nation stepped out of hosting the competition, because of fears relating to the Ebola outbreak in the West of Africa.

It was certainly an exciting start to the competition with a 1-1 draw between the two sides considered underdogs in a group also containing Gabon and Burkina Faso. In terms of English interest, one Championship player had the honour of scoring the first goal in the competition.

He may have not scored for Middlesbrough since joining from Mallorca in the summer, but Emilio Nsue has a good record in front of goal for his country.

The Middlesbrough attacker, who was a Spanish under-21 international, slotted home calmly after being played in by a team-mate. It was his fourth goal in as many official caps for his country.

So it is clear that if Equatorial Guinea are to go anywhere in this competition, the Middlesbrough star will need to be in top form.
