Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe returned to the Premier League against the club where he became a goal-scoring hero on Saturday.
Football has a way of creating story-lines such as the one that saw the former England international make his debut for the Black Cats against Tottenham Hotspur, but the 32-year-old could not do what he normally does and score on his first outing for a new club.
Ultimately Sunderland slipped to a 2-1 defeat after Jan Vertonghen and Christian Eriksen ensured Seb Larsson's goal for the visitors was a mere consolation. But how did Defoe do on his return to the Premier League?
As you can see from the statistic below, Defoe had a brilliant passing accuracy of 100 per cent, but he had only one shot during his 75 minutes on the pitch and that was off-target.
|Passing Accuracy||Key Passes||Goal Assists||Shots||Shots on Target||Touches||Mins Played|
Aside from that Defoe failed to play a single key pass, but his very presence in the Sunderland side means Gus Poyet's men will be considerably more confident moving forward.
Defoe is a natural goal-scorer and when he gets back up to speed with the English top flight he should fill his boots once more.
After his Sunderland debut, we took to Twitter to see what his new fans thought of Defoe's performance and you can read a selection of what we found below:
