Southampton have maintained their challenge for a top-four finish in the Premier League this season with a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United away from home.
The Saints took the lead at St. James’ Park in the 14th minute when Eljero Elia found the target with his right foot from close range after being teed up by James Ward-Prowse.
Newcastle restored parity just before the half-hour mark through Yoan Gouffran, who shot home from inside the Southampton penalty box.
Ronald Koeman’s side, though, had the last laugh as they found the winner in the 62nd minute when Elia scored his second goal of the evening from a Shane Long headed pass.
Hosts Newcastle stepped up their game thereafter and made a late rally, but they had to eat humble pie at home.
The result means that Southampton remain third in the Premier League table and are very much in contention for a top-four finish in the Premier League this season.
