Tottenham morning update: Early team news; boss on possibly benching player

A select round-up of the latest news relating to Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur take on Sunderland later today with Jermain Defoe in line to make his Black Cats debut against a side he knows very well.

Tottenham are currently sixth in the Premier League, two points outside the European places, while Sunderland are one point clear of the relegation zone in 16th.

In early team news, the BBC reports that Harry Kane could return to the starting line-up after sitting out the FA Cup third round replay against Burnley last week.

Two central defenders - Federico Fazio and Younes Kaboul - are doubtful due to injury while a third - Vlad Chiriches - has a back injury and may not feature.

In other news, the Daily Mail has published comments from Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino regarding the club’s £26million man Roberto Soldado.

“If I decide tomorrow he will go to the bench it will not affect his confidence,” Pochettino said.

Soldado has scored just four goals this season, including just one in 13 league appearances; and while Kane has been the shining light for Spurs’ front-line, the form of the Spaniard means Tottenham will surely move for a new forward at the first available opportunity, be that this month or in the summer.
