It was a rare venture for the youngster, who started the season at right-back as Spurs where short of cover down that right-hand side.
Judging by his display against Sunderland, however, it is a venture that Tottenham supporters will be delighted to see more and more often.
And the beauty for boss Pochettino, of course, is that Dier is one for the future. If he can play well at centre-back (he can) now, he can most certainly deliver as the years go by.
The 21-year-old was only in the Tottenham first team as regular starter Federico Fazio was out with illness, while Younes Kaboul was also ruled out - a blessing rather than a hindrance for Pochettino, no doubt.
And Dier did the business for Spurs as Christian Eriksen scored yet another late winner to secure a 2-1 win against Sunderland. The north London side did not look all that comfortable throughout, with Jan Vertonghen giving away a silly foul for the free kick that Sebastian Larsson curled home to equalise for Sunderland in the first half.
But Tottenham ground out a win once again, with Dier shining for the home side. Here's how Spurs fans saw the 21-year-old's performance on Twitter!
Attritional game but a great win and a brilliant finish from Eriksen again. Dier and Stambouli had their best games in a Spurs shirt. #thfc— James Dickens (@JamesN11) January 17, 2015
However, I thought Dier stepped in well for Fazio, and Eriksen was a delight to watch. Stambouli much better than his critics claim #thfc— Clayton Hodges (@clayski123) January 17, 2015
Dier looks much better played in his correct position & Jan had probably his best game of the season— Anthoulla (@Anthoulla1) January 17, 2015
